A Cultural Palette

Japan’s traditional colors (和の色 / 和色) are deeply tied to the natural world, literature, and cultural rituals. The names alone evoke poetic imagery: “Sakura-iro” (桜色, cherry blossom pink), “Asagi” (浅葱, light blue), “Kurenai” (紅, crimson), and many more.

These aren’t just colors — they’re cultural artifacts. In traditional Japan, specific colors were associated with social status, seasons, emotions, and even moral qualities. The color palette evolved alongside Japanese history, from the Heian period’s aristocratic preferences to the rich textile traditions of the Edo period.

Our Research Journey

Creating Nippon Colors was a journey of discovery and reverence. Our team immersed ourselves in research:

  • We pored over historical textile samples in museums
  • Consulted with cultural historians and traditional artisans
  • Studied classical Japanese literature for color references
  • Examined ukiyo-e prints and their color techniques
  • Analyzed the pigments used in Buddhist temple paintings

We ultimately collected over 250 color names, studied their historical roots, and worked with color experts to represent them accurately in the sRGB space. Each color required careful calibration to ensure it maintained its essence when viewed on modern displays.

Beyond Simple Color Picking

Our hope was to create more than a design reference. We wanted Nippon Colors to be a meditative tool — something that designers, artists, and curious minds could explore at their own pace, reconnecting with the past while building for the future.

The app encourages slow exploration. Unlike most color-picking tools that emphasize efficiency, Nippon Colors invites users to linger, to contemplate, and to appreciate the subtle differences between related hues. This philosophy aligns with traditional Japanese aesthetic concepts like ma (間, negative space) and wabi-sabi (侘寂, finding beauty in imperfection and transience).

Designed with Intention

Every detail in Nippon Colors, from the typography to the spacing to the background texture, was chosen to express quiet refinement. The interface steps back, allowing the colors themselves to speak. Navigation is intuitive yet unhurried, encouraging users to notice subtle distinctions between related hues.

We deliberately avoided overwhelming users with technical color data upfront. Instead, we prioritized the cultural context, the Japanese naming conventions, and the visual experience. Technical details are available but don’t distract from the primary experience of color appreciation.

The result is an experience that honors tradition, while feeling unmistakably modern — a digital tool with the soul of an ancient craft.
